How To Work With Us

What to Expect When Working with NVIFN

1

NVIFN is the first of its kind being fully mobile. We are able to take our services anywhere in rural Nevada.

We collaborate with our community by caring for survivors across the lifespan.

NVIFN is proud to partner with the following agencies and organizations.

2

Once the examination is complete, the evidence is packaged and turned over to law enforcement. Our nurse completes the chart report and enters the kit number into the Track-Kit site.

If the survivor is not ready to report the assault, and as long as a weapon was not used during the assault, the kit can be held in a secure evidence locker at NVIFN until either the survivor chooses to report the crime or for the life of the crime. This means we will hold said evidence until the statute of limitations on that crime runs out.

3

After NVIFN receives a request, one of our nurses completes a phone triage with the referring agency. We ask for preliminary information such as:

  • The date of assault

  • The type of assault

  • The location and age of the survivor

  • The ability of the survivor to consent and assent to examination

  • If law enforcement is involved

We offer two exam options:

  • Acute exams: A nurse and advocate respond to the location or meet at NVIFN’s office. This is dependent on comfort and ease for survivors.
    Non-acute exams:
This type of exam is scheduled for either our office or a location that works for the survivor. Both the nurse and advocate will respond.

At the time of an acute exam, forensic evidence is collected as well as bedside pregnancy, urinalysis, and HIV testing upon request. We also offer STI testing through LabCorp upon request.

NVIFN provides STI prophylaxis following the current CDC guidelines with the exception of HIV PEP. At this time, we do not have funding to purchase these medications and keep them on hand. However, our hope is to receive grant funding to offer this service in the near future.

4

NVIFN provides the victim-survivor with a folder of resources for mental health, primary care, or urgent care needs. We also offer follow-up information with our office, as needed.

Within three days, an NVIFN advocate or nurse follows up with the victim-survivor via phone call for continuity of care and support. If medical advice is needed, the advocate informs the nurse. If needed, a follow-up appointment can be scheduled with NVIFN.

5

If the case moves through to court proceedings, NVIFN staff is available for advocacy and additional support. Additionally, nursing staff may be subpoenaed.
